What to see in San Gimignano during your stay
San Gimignano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990, and a walk among its medieval towers is all it takes to understand why. What is San Gimignano famous for? Its skyline: surviving medieval towers that still dominate the view over the Val d’Elsa, earning it the nickname “the town of fine towers”. The historic centre is best explored on foot, among squares, museums, artisan workshops and some of Italy’s most famous gelaterias.
A few tips:
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon, when the centre is far more enjoyable outside peak hours
- Don’t miss the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta and the Museo Civico
- Enjoy the view over the Val d’Elsa from Torre Grossa
- Explore the Thursday market in Piazza della Cisterna
Guided tours of the historic centre are also available in the area, including options covering the Via Francigena and the Vernaccia vineyards, ancient parish churches and long-lost castles, and the San Gimignano canyon at Botro ai Buchi.

From the hotel, you can reach some of Tuscany’s most beautiful destinations in just an hour by car:
Volterra, about 30 minutes away. An Etruscan city known for alabaster, its cyclopean walls and open views over the Val di Cecina.
Monteriggioni, about 20 minutes away. Tuscany’s best-preserved fortified village, with its medieval walls still intact.
The Chianti countryside, right around the corner. White gravel roads, vineyards, and villages like Castellina, Radda and Gaiole, among the most scenic routes in Italy.
Siena, about 30 minutes by car. Piazza del Campo, the Duomo, the Palio. A city that deserves at least a full day. To avoid traffic and parking issues, we recommend public transport: Poggibonsi train station is just minutes from the hotel.
The scenic walk to San Gimignano
Via Vecchia, the old dirt road leading up to the centre of San Gimignano, starts just 30 metres from the hotel. It’s a scenic 20-minute walk through vineyards, olive groves and rolling hills, with the view of San Gimignano gradually opening up as you go.
It’s an easy walk, suitable for everyone, but if you’d rather not walk, our free shuttle takes you to the historic centre at set times. Alternatively, the bus stop is just 100 metres from Hotel Sovestro.

The Tuscan countryside is beautiful to explore by bike, though it isn’t exactly flat. That’s why reception can give you contacts for renting classic bikes or e-bikes, so you can enjoy the scenery without letting the hills put you off.
Rafting on the Elsa River
Just a few minutes’ drive from San Gimignano, in the municipality of Colle di Val d’Elsa, you’ll find Sentierelsa, a river park perfect for relaxing or trying your hand at packrafting and soft rafting. Ask reception for more information.
